Für ihre Arbeit zur Herstellung von Lehmbaustoffen aus Baustellenaushub wurden Micha Kretschmann und Christian Gäth, Alumni der TU Berlin und Masterabsolventen des Natural Building Labs, für den Bundespreis Ecodesign nominiert. Der Bundespreis ist die höchste staatliche Auszeichnung für nachhaltiges Design und wird jährlich vom Umweltministerium und Umweltbundesamt ausgelobt.
Gepresste Lehmsteine - Perspektiven für eine postfossile Erde

Master Thesis

Eine Rückbesinnung auf Regionalität und Ökologie von Architektur und Stadt bildet die Grundlage für das Bauen innerhalb planetarer Grenzen und kann ein regeneratives Miteinander von Mensch und Umwelt wiederherstellen. Es gilt zu überprüfen, welche Materialien für das zukunftsfähige Bauen in spezifischen Regionen verfügbar sind. Diese Arbeit erörtert die Eignung von gepressten Lehmsteinen für den Materialkanon des Bauens in Berlin-Brandenburg. Gepresste Lehmsteine, die ohne weitere Zusätze hergestellt werden, sind nicht nur energiearm in der Herstellung, sondern auch vollständig wiederverwendbar und können somit den Weg zu einer kreislaufgerechten Praxis im Bauen ebnen.

Earth Construction, Installation, Seminar

As part of the exhibition YOYI! Care, Repair, Heal in Gropius Bau, 30 students from Natural Building Lab realised the Bee Hive - an 8m diameter dome, constructed from bamboo and earth - as a setting to exhibit films from artist Tabita Rezaire. The exhibition features perspectives from 25 artists on the entangled themes of care, repair and healing. Tabita’s works - including Singing Bee Garden (2021) - focus on how local, scientific and spiritual knowledge is handed down through generations and the installation should invite visitors to “rest within the womb of the earth”.

Lehmbautechniken wie Lehmziegel, Wellerlehm und Stampflehm gehören zu den ältesten der Menschheit bekannten Bauweisen und sind auch in der heutigen hoch technisierten Bauwirtschaft von großer Bedeutung. Insbesondere im Kontext von Klimawandel und Ressourcenknappheit muss der Lehmbau einen höheren Stellenwert in der Architekturausbildung und -praxis erhalten. In dem Blockseminar werden die theoretischen und praktischen Grundlagen für die Anwendung von Lehmbautechniken anhand einer Reihe von 1:1-Projekten vermittelt.

Circular Timber, Design Studio

As part of a joint funding application with the Bezirk Charlottenburg, in 2022 the TU will be realising a 1000m2 pavilion on the campus to provide an impulse for visitors and to facilitate more interaction between the university and the city. The museum should become an innovative communication and exhibition space, that can provide space for an open trans-disciplinary dialogue between science, art and society as an embodiment of the principles of citizen science. In WiSe 19-20 a series of design studios from different disciplines produced the first ideas for the project. This was followed up in SoSe 21 by a joint studio from NBL and FG DE/CO, which distilled key themes and architectural motives into four strong ideas for the project to move into the planning stage.
